Horses for days and color for miles!! August 24 at Billings Livestock hosted 537 head of horses and mules with a $32,000 catalog sale high, $31,000 for the fanciest team around, a top loose at $8,200, and a draft cross hitting $12,000.
Ready, set, internet – you can buy, too!! 42 head sold to online buyers from coast to coast with holding, hauling, and insurance available for both on premise and online purchases.
Congratulations to Hip 134 “Dun Its Sueno” a 2019 AQHA Dun Stallion sired by Hollywood Dun It consigned by John McPhail, Lisbon, IA hitting August’s number one with a $32,000 sale price.
A finished reiner, the good minded stallion stood 15 hands and weighed 1200 lbs, had been used in grand entries, had been ridden on the trails and on cattle, too.
Grade horses made themselves known at the August event as seven out of the top 20 sold grade.
Hips 170 and 170 X “Billy and Barney” a 2019 Grade Black Percheron Gelding Team were offered by Joel and Jane Qualm, Ericson, NE.
As good as they get, the five-year-old matched team had been originally broke by the Amish and had been used by the Qualm’s on their ranch ever since. The team had been hooked to mowers, manure spreaders, feed wagons, were good about traffic and had been in several parades, weddings, and county fair team shows.
The first-class team brought $31,000 and sold to a California buyer.
Hip 100 “Harper” a 2019 Grade Sorrel Gelding offered by Sixshooter Livestock, Blackfoot, ID had everybody’s attention.
Well made, respectful, and as honest as they come, the gentle gelding brought $16,000.
So pretty and sired by the #5 All-Time Leading Sire of Barrel Racing Money earners – A Streak of Fling – and out of a Dash Ta Fame dam – Hip 57 “Famous Fling” a 2016 AQHA Brown Mare had a lot to talk about.
Consigned by Jason and Ellie Kravig, Canon City, CO, the finished barrel horse had multiple 1-D wins, in addition to youth wins, too. She brought $18,700.
All kinds, all the time and Hips 85 and 85X “Gunner and Trooper” a 2019 Grade Buckskin Fjord Mammoth Jack Cross Team offered by James Prevost, Fort Shaw, MT.
Ride, drive, or pack they brought $12,000.
Billings Loose market remained strong as 321 head sold in the loose division with a $8,200 high, followed by $8,000 and $7,500. 57 head brought $2,500 or better with 78 hitting $2,000 plus.
Loose averages include the top five at $7,380, top ten at $6,045, top 20 brought $4,867, top 50 at $3,696, and the top 100 averaged $2,857.
Overall catalog sale averages include the top five at $22,640, top 10 at $18,190, top 20 brought $14,397, top 50 at $10,752, and the top 100 averaged $8,169.
Sale shoppers find the bargains, with 42 catalog horses bringing $4,000 o $7,500.

Those Fab Metallics
Metallic Cat mares hit the high note at Billings Livestock’s “Mid-Summer Special Catalog Sale” July 27 where the top two selling horses – both Metallic Cat mares – brought $30,000 each.
Congratulations to Hips 124 “Metallic Fawn” a 2020 Buckskin Mare by Metallic Cat and out of a daughter of Hollywood Dun It selling in foal to Badboonarising for 2025 offered by Cathy Linderman, Idaho and Hip 128 “Exquisite Metal” a 2022 APHA Sorrel Mare x Metallic Cat and out of a Dual Rey daughter consigned by Parker Horse Company earning top sale honors.
One place, one weekend, and boom – 542 head of horses offered with the top five averaging $27,800, top draft cross at $16,750, a loose horse high of $9,250, and the #1 gelding at $29,500.
Golden buckskin, kind, gentle and double fancy, Hip 39 “Hesatuf Sun” a 2017 AQHA Buckskin Gelding by GBH Hesatuf Cashwood consigned by Kyle Schmitt, Holland, IA earned the top gelding spot.
Six out of the top seven selling horses sold to an online buyer, with 57 head out of the July event selling through the online platform.
Leader of the pack in the draft cross division was Hip 32 “Big Sky” 2018 Grade Draft Cross gelding consigned by Riverbend Bar Milton Ranch, Morgan, UT.
Gentle, kind and standing 16 hands, the class gelding had been used in the mountains packing and traveling all the back country, seen miles of trails, ranch used, too, and sold to Mark Tudahl, Big Fork, MT.

In the pony division, Hip 122 “Cee Cee” a 2016 Grade Silver Dapple Mare owned and shown by Lena Bradford, Preston, ID took the top spot at $16,500.
Run barrels, poles, 4-H, ride her western or English, the special filly sold to Texas.
A really good summertime sale from start to finish, the sale averages include the top five at $27,800, top ten at $24,350, top 20 averaged $20,572, top 50 at $14,895 and the top 100 averaged $10,584.
America’s loose horse leader saw the top five average $7,790, top ten at $7,075, top 20 averaged $5,992, top 50 at $4,441, and top 100 averaged $3,272.

Congrats to Hip 82 “Matt” a 2016 Grade Buckskin Gelding consigned by Quarter Circle 4R Ranch Horses, Cody, WY hitting number one. The gentle gelding had been ranch used, trail ridden, had seen the sites of town, and had been there and done that.
Gentle, user friendly, having a solid resume is the common denominator on the top tier of the ride horses, registered or not as three out of the top five selling horses sold grade.
Two horses hit $25,000 to claim reserve sale honors including Hip 60 “Choctaw” a 2013 Grade Buckskin Gelding offered by Ed Brainard, Manhattan, MT and Hip 132 “Gotta Yellowstone” a 2022 AQHA Buckskin Stallion x Spooks Gotta Spark offered by Matt Mardis, Kinston, OK .
Sale shoppers find the bargains, and 38 head brought from $5,000 o $7,000.

One place, one weekend, and 461 head of horses rocked Billings Livestock’s May 25 sale event with a $48,000 high, a top five average of $26,800, a show ‘em and shop ‘em preview, topped off with the “Best of the Remuda” ranch horse competition, and a whopping’ selection of #allkindsallthetime.
Leader of the pack – Hip 95 – “Twice The Charm” a 2018 AQHA Chestnut mare by the big deal – Metallic Cat – and out of the $1.7 million dollar producer – Tapt Twice – brought $48,000.
Kind, gentle, built to last and coming with NCHA earnings, too, the prettiest girl in the room sold to Tina Jamison, Vilas, NC.
Runnerup sale accolades to Hip 96 “Bartenders Sniper” a 2015 AQHA Bay Roan Gelding by Bartenders Red Buck consigned by Jared Meyer Performance Horses, Bernard, IA.
The finished head horse had been hauled, came extra gentle and kind, and fit any level of rider including novice and beginner. The quality gelding sold to Knot U2 Ranch, Missoula, MT.
Good and…..grade!! Drafts and draft crosses lit up Billings, too, as the top five “Grade Only” averaged a slick $15,300.
At the top of the draft cross list Hip 69 “Billy” a 2021 Grade Bay Draft Cross Gelding offered by Emanual Miller, Hulett, WY showed flawlessly in both pre-sale previews, including riding with four youngsters aboard, side passing to a mounting block, taught to lay down, used outside on the ranch, and came gentle and willing.
The fancy draftX gelding brought $17,500.
Loose market felt the impending summer pressure as 282 head were offered in the loose division lead off with a $6,250 high, 50 head at $2,000 plus, and 81 head at $1,500 or better.
Loose averages include the top five at $5,430; top ten at $4,815; Top 20 brought $4,272; Top 50 averaged $3,404 and top 100 brought $2,454.
Overall sale averages include top five at $26,800; Top ten $22,410; Top 20 at $18,435; Top 50 brought $12,881; top 100 averaged $9,345.

Loaded with rope horses, performance prospects, draft crosses, ponies and so much more Billings Livestock’s “April Special Catalog Sale” and Spring Rope Horse Sale event April 26-27 saw solid demand from first horse to last.
A full performance preview on Friday bonused by the rope horse jackpot, allowed for consignors and buyers alike to show and shop the horses.
The April event welcomed 604 head of horses, saw a $62,500 high, top five average of $38,900 and a top 100 average of $12,510.
Congratulations to Hip 139 “Bougee Rey Von” a 2021 AQHA Red Roan stallion by Stevie Rey Von consigned by Bruce Bebo, Redfield, SD hitting the top spot at $62,500.
Rope horses – all levels – from started to PRCA Rodeo ready – shined as the top rope horse of the day brought $30,000 followed by $29,000, and $25,000.
Reserve sale honors at $35,000 to Hip 88 “Catts Stylish Badger” a 2015 AQHA Sorrel Gelding x Sophisticated Catt offered by Kyle Schmitt, Holland, IA.
Budget minded?? 58 head of catalog horses and mules brought from $5,000 to $9,500.
Loose horse division continued strong on the ride prospects with the top loose of the day at $9,000, followed by $8,700 and $8,000.
81 head of loose brought $2,000 or better, with 39 over the $3,000 mark.

A Really Big Deal
Oh, those drafts, draft crosses, and mules – the kind with backcountry and recreational riding experience on their resumes were the really big deal at Billings Livestock’s March 22-23 “Spring Special Catalog Sale” featuring Trail, Outfitting, Guide, Guest horses and mules.
The 26th annual March spring event celebrates the horses and mules who have packed tourists, trail riders, wild game, and seen untouched places and includes consignments from some of the wests most prominent outfitters..
Stats for 2024 set records as 623 head were offered – 507 horses and mules selling grade (unregistered) – with 25 no sales/pass outs, and a top five average of $19,800 – that included two buckskins, two roans, and one dun molly mule.
Joining the BLS High Sellers Club, welcome to Hip 202 “Dusty” a 2018 Grade Dun Haflinger Cross Gelding consigned by Ervin Miller, Hulett, WY.
Ride, drive single or double, the gentle, safe to ride or drive gelding had seen lots of miles outside and on the trails. The everything easy gelding brought $22,500.
Reserve high seller at $21,000 was Hip 272 “Sallee’s Red River” a 2010 Grade Red Roan Draft Cross Gelding consigned by foundation consignors Black Mountain Outfitters, Scott and Sandy Sallee, Emigrant, MT.
Standing 17 hands, the gentle, solid, versatile gelding – ranch, trail ride and guest horse – stayed broke with time off, came picket broke, hobble broke, been ridden in parades, and around dogs and traffic.
Top selling mule and third overall, Hip 363 “Sally” a ten year old Molly offered by Micah Vineyard, Riggins, ID, had been ridden extensively all over the Hells Canyon and Salmon River Canyon, had packed meat, horns, hide, and drug calves to the fire and took grandma to hunting camp.
Suitable for most riders, the nearly perfect molly brought $19,500.
Billings Livestock was proud to welcome the Wowk Ranch and Miller Horses production offering on Friday evening where 27 head of home bred, home raised draft crosses were offered.
Brabant, percheron, gypsy, friesian, and Noriker crosses, a unique set of yearlings brought from $1,500 to $5,500.
Grade horses and mules had their day as 26 head brought $10,000 or better, with 13 head at $12,000 plus.
Rafter D mules consigned a big set of mules – 29 in all – and big they were as many were draft crossed.
The something for everybody set of mules brought from $3,400 to $7,000.
Loose horse division rocked it again where 183 head were offered as is, where is, no speech or rider, with the top loose horse hitting $8,800. 26 head brought $4,000 plus, with 90 at $1,600 or better.
Loose averages include the top five at $7,320, top ten at $6,650, To 20 at $5,670, top 50 brought $4,388, and the top 100 averaged $3,205.

Billings Livestock’s annual “February Special Catalog Sale” February 23-24-25 saw new records set – again – in the catalog division as the weekend’s top horse sold for $147,000.
With 820 head of horses offered over the three days, the big horse sale weekend in Billings, Montana included the annual “Sons and Daughters” sale session featuring top-end quality and pedigreed individuals that drove the market to new highs as the top five averaged a smooth $69,000.
Adding additional energy and reach to the quality presented, the “ShowCase Sale Sessions” both Friday and Saturday allowed for on-premise as well as online bidding and buying options for approved buyers. Nearly 600 new online buyers applied for purchase.
Four out of the top five selling horses were stallions – three of them palomino – including Hip 321 “Smart Guy” a 2021 AQHA Palomino Stallion sired by Smart Chic Olena and out of the $100K money earning mare Whizin Off Sparks x Topsail Whiz.
Offered by Cooper Smith, Smith Ranch, Whitesboro, TX, Daniel Schloemer, Agent, the young stallion came 6 panel negative, had been in professional reining training for a year, and was eligible for so many incentives.
Red roan and loaded with bone, foot, and all the charisma packaged together in Hip 328 “LightstrikenHashtags” a 2021 AQHA Stallion sired by Hashtags and out of a Dual Rey daughter consigned by Matt Mardis, Kingston, OK.
Shown in the preview, the gentle, well broke stallion was eligible for a multitude of incentives and sold to Will Bentz, Burns, OR.
He was sired by the boss – Metallic Cat – and came palomino in color, and Hip 309 “Ima Metallic Gold” a 2014 AQHA stallion offered by Chappel-Slavin Partnership, Collinsville, TX stood 15.1 hands.
Out of a Dual Pep daughter, Dual Citizen, the stand-up stallion brought $50,000 and sold to T Bone Cattle Co., Alberta, Canada.
A stellar selection of mares came name brand and fancy, as the February event was loaded with mares with a lot to talk about – including daughters of Dash Ta Fame, Dual Rey, Metallic Cat, Stevie Rey Von, Smart Little Lena, Once In A Blu Boon, Electric Snow, Smooth Talkin Style, Sixes Pick, High Brow Cat, and so many more.
Top end geldings, ponies, and draft crosses were also offered, with Hip 210 “Drifter” a 2018 Grade Draft Cross gelding consigned by Ervin Miller, Hulett, WY earning top draft cross honors with a $35,000 sales ticket.
In the gelding department, the weekend’s Number one gelding belonged to Tyler Thomas, Dalhart, TX who offered Hip 411 “Deebo” a 2020 AQHA Red Roan by Hashtags that came honest, broke, and started roping.
The first-class gelding brought $40,000.
Sale averages prove the depth of the quality where the top five averaged $69,000, top ten at $55,050, top 20 brought $43,550, top 50 at $32,630, and the top 100 averaged $24,232.
137 head brought $10,000 or better, with 52 over $20,000.
However – a horse for every budget – 68 head of catalog horses brought from $2,500 to $5,000.
A red-hot loose market prevailed with standing room only at Billings as America’s Number One loose market continued to set the pace with a $9,000 high, a top five average of $6,880, top ten at $6,290, top 50 at $4,625, and the top 100 averaged $3,706.
97 head brought $2,500 plus, with 35 at $4,000 or better and 21 at $5,000 plus.
Billings Livestock was proud to welcome the American Quarter Horse Association and their OnSite Services to the February event allowing customers a one-on-one experience with an AQHA representative.
