RECORD SETTING

The 27th annual March spring event celebrates the horses and mules who have packed tourists, trail riders, wild game, and seen untouched places and includes consignments from some of the west’s most prominent outfitters.                            

Stats for 2025 set records as 831 head were offered – 663 horses and mules selling grade (unregistered)  –  with 19 no sales/pass outs,  and a top five average of $28,870- that included three teams, a registered gypsy gelding, and a draft cross.                           

Joining the BLS High Sellers Club, welcome to Hips 245 & 245X “Roy and Roger” a 2020 model pair of Percheron/QH Cross Geldings that both rode and drove.                                        

The fancy team was consigned by Triple T Livestock, Nevis, MN and brought $50,000.  In runnerup position another quality team Hip 282 & 282X “Jane and June” a 206/2017 Grade Bay Percheron/Belgian Cross Mares consigned by Hanson Horse Ranch, Preston, MN.  The beautiful team brought $29,600.                                       

Third spot to Hips 277 & 277X “Marti and Buzz” a 2019/2020 Grade Black & White Draft Cross Mare and Gelding consigned by Burton Simmental, Talmage, UT. Ride them or drive them, they brought $24,500.                                     

The weekend’s number one registered horse “KR El Diablo” a 2019 Gypsy Horse Registry Chestnut Gelding x MV Artemis consigned by Daniel Coggin, Leeds, AL.                     

The only one like him in the entirre sale, the gentle, well trained, handsome fellow brought $20,250.  Number one draft cross gelding was another pretty boy Hip 209″ Chavez” a 2012 Grade Bay Roan Half Draft Gelding owned and shown by Shania Whiteman, Richey, MT.  The seen it all gelding brought $20,000.  “Dusty” a 2018 Grade Dun Haflinger Cross Gelding consigned by Ervin Miller, Hulett, WY.                    

Billings Livestock was proud to welcome the Wowk Ranch and Miller Horses production offering 35   head of home bred, home raised draft crosses were offered.                     

Brabant, percheron, gypsy, friesian, and Noriker crosses, a unique set of yearlings brought from $2,000 to $7,200.                               

Grade horses and mules had their day as 28 head brought $10,000 or better, with 19 head at $12,000 plus.                        

Rafter D mules consigned a big set of mules – 21 in all – and big they were as many were draft crossed.                               

So solid and steady month in and month out, Billings’ loose horse market continues to lead the division across the United States. 

Top loose at $8,700, with a top five averged of $7,140, top en at $6,480; Top 20 ave $5945; Top 50 at $4,895; and the top 100 averaged $3,717. 73 head brought $2,500 or better with 40 at $4,000 plus.  All classes all divisions, the averages for March in Billings include the top five at $28,870; TO ten at $23,685; top 20 brought $19,518; Top 50 at $14,730 and the top 100 averaged $11,678.           

Next up at Billings is the April Special Catalog Sale and Spring Rope Horse Special April 25-26.  All kinds, all classes of horses sell on premise with online bidding available.

FEBRUARY 21-22-23

The wonderful world of Billings!!

Here’s the February Sale buzz – 742 head of horses over three days – February 21-22-23 -a $61,000 sale topper, the top five – every one a stallion – averaged $55,200, a new loose horse record set at $12,250, and the third largest February Sale event on record!!

This sale had all the bells and whistles – pedigree, quality, performance, a full preview, a standing room only crowd – plus – the added feature of online buying as 108 head sold to ONLINE buyers.

Hello, handsome!! Hip 322 “Reyzd By Metallic” a 2023 AQHA Red Roan Colt sired by Metallic Cat and out of Reys Desire x Dual Rey offered by Chappel Horse Sales hit the high spot at $61,000 followed by Hip 314 “Cat Knip” a 2022 AQHA Gray Stallion sired by High Brow Cat and out of ARC Ruby Playgonia consigned by Smith Ranch a close second at $60,000.

Top six selling horses were stallions, with nine out of the top 15 selling as studs.

Good geldings a plenty, the top gelding honors to Hip 294 “Bad French” a 2021 AQHA/APHA Sorrel Gelding x BadBoonaRising and out of Post Card from Paris x Light N Lena.

Offered by TT Horses and Hounds, Tyler Thomas, Dalhart, TX the fancy broke, good sized, gentle, the heavily incentived gelding brought $39,000.

Mares made magic, too, as the top selling mares brought $36,000, $35,000, and $33,500.

February’s Number One – Hip 271 “Stormcatt” a 2016 AQHA Black Mare x Sophisticated Catt consigned by Smith Horses sold in foal for 2025 to Spooks Gotta Spark. 

Talk about pretty and already an Equistate money earner, Hip 344 “WY Guys Ginger Snap” a 2020 Palomino Mare sired by Guys Pocket Coin came paid in and current on incentives including Ruby Buckle, Cowboy State, Future Fortunes, VGBRA, and Royal Crown.

Consigned by Gage and Jewel Greer, Buffalo, WY, the special mare brought $33,000.

Averages reflect the quality offered with the top ten at $46,100: Top 20 averaged $37,850; Top 50 brought $27,589; Top 100 averaged $20,669.

Loose horse division continued it’s wild ride setting a new high for a loose horses at $12,250, followed by $8,500 and $8,200.

The top five loose averaged $8,650, top ten at $7,725; top 20 brought $6,853, top 50 at $5,139 and the top 100 averaged $3,838.
